MA Snow Totals For March 4 Storm

It ended up being the strongest snowstorm of the year for most of the state. See the totals here - they may surprise you.

Now that was a snowstorm. The heaviest snowstorm of the season started late Sunday and finished early Monday, even as nearly all of it fell while most people were asleep.

The forecasts of 6-8 inches were well short of what we actually got. Well over a foot fell across the state, including more than 15 inches in Boston and a state-high of 16 inches south of the city. The Cape and some parts of Southeastern Mass. dodged major snow totals, as predicted.

The snow total measurements are unofficial, and the snow left over from the storm that opened the weekend could have added a bit to the overall number, the National Weather Service said.

While many employers had workers come in late and schools were canceled in waves, there were still issues on the morning commute.

The MBTA was running regular service, except for bus service and the Silver Line, which are being delayed by 20-30 minutes and in many cases running snow routes. Also, bus shuttles replaced the Mattapan Trolley.

Five commuter rail lines were seeing some sort of delay as of 9 a.m. The Fitchburg, Franklin, Middleborough/Lakeville, Newburyport/Rockport and Providence/Stoughton lines had either some sort of cancelation or roughly 20-minute delay.

The most impactful crashes were when a box truck rollover in Newton closed all but one lane on the Pike westbound, and a crash in Beverly on Route 128 South. A downed tree closed a southbound lane on Route 1 in Topsfield.

All the runways were closed Monday morning at Logan.

The following are unofficial snow totals via the National Weather Service as of 9:45 a.m. The final number is the time of the measurement.
