MA Weather: When Today's Storms Will Interrupt Near-Record Heat

Strong to severe thunderstorms will cut through what will feel like more than 100 degrees outside.

It might not look like it yet, but forecasters are expecting strong thunderstorms to break through what will feel like roughly 100-degree heat Thursday.

A heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. as temperatures get into the mid-90s, dew points peak in the low 70s, and heat indices spike as high as 103 degrees, the National Weather Service said. The Berkshires and Cape & Islands will instead be under a hazardous weather outlook.

The storms - a few of which will be strong or severe, the NWS said - will come north to south from about 2-8 p.m. Some areas may dodge the rain, depending on how scattered the storms become. "Main concerns are strong winds & locally brief very heavy rainfall," the NWS wrote.

There could be some flash flood threats if things break a certain way.

Thursday should cap what was a hot, muggy opening to September. Boston finished Wednesday just 1 degree shy of tying its record set in 1880. The city maxed out at 92 degrees yesterday.

On Friday, high temperatures will be much more comfortable - though not quite fall-like - in the 70s. Overnight lows will get into the 40s.
