MA's Top 100 Highest-Paid Employees In 2018

Who knew higher education could be such a goldmine? Those schools that students enter life-altering debt to attend make sure to pay top staff members handsomely, and some of the state universities in Massachusetts are no exception.

Out of the top 100 highest-paid state employees in Massachusetts in 2018, 95 of them were employed by the University of Massachusetts. That includes the top 31 highest-paid employees, and anyone who made more than $375,000 from the state.

Ten state employees made more than $500,000, including UMass Chancellor and Senior VP of Health Sciences Michael Collins, who topped the list as the only state employee who made $1 million last year. Collins has been the highest-paid or second-highest paid state employee every year since at least 2010.

The non-UMass state employees in the top 100 were Chief Medical Examiner Mindy Hull (No. 32,) former MBTA General Manager Luis Manuel Ramirez (No. 58,) Greenfield Community College President Robert Pura (No. 87,) State Police Sgt. Denis Mahoney (No. 93) and MBTA Police Lt. Donald O'Connor (No. 100.)

The statewide payroll was $7.74 billion in 2018. That was an increase from $7.32 billion the previous year.

Employee pay includes base pay, overtime pay, buyouts, and "other pay," according to the state comptroller's website. You can see that breakdown here, along with how much other state employees made.
