Massachusetts Weather Forecast: Winter Weather Advisory Now in Effect

Tuesday morning will kick off what looks like a three-day stretch of nasty wet weather.

An uncomfortable mixture of precipitation will envelop the region Tuesday morning as the start of a three-day stretch of wet weather. First up is a plowable amount of snow throughout most of the state Tuesday followed by some nasty sleet and freezing rain.

The morning commute will start with all three - snow, sleet and freezing rain. The snow will continue into the afternoon north of the Mass Pike before turning into sleet, but the wintry mix will give way to rain pretty quickly south of the Mass Pike.

By the evening, everything should be normal rain, but some pockets of freezing rain could persist in the northern part of the state, according to NBC Boston meteorologist Aaron Perry.

A winter weather advisory was posted for the following areas:

The weather isn't expected to postpone the Patriots' Super Bowl parade, set for Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Boston. But it won't make it overly comfortable.

Snow totals when the temperatures are so close to freezing can be tough to predict, but the latest predictions have 2-4 inches north of the Pike and about an inch or less south of the Pike. Towns near the New Hampshire border can expect about 2 inches.

Here's the latest forecast for snow:

The snow is expected to start before daybreak and would impact the morning commute. Officials, as always, warn motorists of busy drive times in bad weather. But the NWS says there is an even bigger concern for the PM drive, as the snow transitions to sleet and freezing rain in some areas.

Wednesday's forecast is a bit more clear because of such high temperatures. The majority of precipitation is expected to be rain as temperatures rise into the mid-to-high 50s.

Temperatures will drop about 20 degrees into Thursday, making for the possibility of another snowstorm brushing past Southern New England.
