Massachusetts Weather Forecast: How Much Wind Will We Get, How Cold Will it Be?

Here's updated estimates on how blustery it might be tonight when temperatures drop to as low as 25 degrees below zero. Also, snow Friday.

The National Weather service has issued some watches for the blustery, blistering cold expected Thursday night into Friday morning. And when those wind gusts die down, expect a few inches of snow.

Above (and below) are updated NWS estimates on wind chill factors and wind gusts, as of Thursday afternoon.

A high wind watch and wind chill watch will be in effect for Massachusetts from Thursday evening to late Thursday night, as wind gusts as high as 65 miles per hour and wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero are anticipated. The wind will be blowing west and will sit at about 15-20 mph. The fiercest winds are expected between 8 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday.

Winds out in Provincetown will get close to 70 mph, Boston 60 mph, and the interior part of the state closer to the mid-50s mph. Here's the updated estimates, as of Thursday afternoon:

There will also a storm watch in effect.

The NWS warns that winds have the potential to be dangerous and could cause scattered power outages. The outages pose another major threat because of the extreme cold.

Temperatures will threaten to drop below zero in parts of Massachusetts, meaning the wind chills will dip to as low 15-25 degrees below zero. The record low for Boston is on Dec. 16 is 1 degree (1883) and for Worcester is -2 degrees (1932).

There is also snow expected Friday night, up to 6 inches in the interior part of the state and closer to 3-4 inches on the coast.

The snow is expected to change to rain Saturday morning.
