6-Alarm Fire Tears Through Boston Building
One firefighter was injured in the massive effort to contain the blaze.
BOSTON, MA — Firefighters have knocked down much of a six-alarm fire that tore through a two-story commercial building in Roxbury's Nubian Square Monday, though crews continued working on flames in the basement, according to the Boston Fire Department.
Crews responded to the fire at the Edison Building at 72 Warren St. at approximately 7:30 a.m. The fire began in the basement before spreading throughout the building and quickly escalated through multiple alarms as firefighters worked to contain the blaze near the intersection of Warren, Dudley, and Harrison streets.
Firefighters initially entered the building before determining nobody was inside. Crews were later ordered out of the building and worked on the blaze entirely from the exterior, with engines surrounding the block and supplying water to multiple ladder trucks.

As of 12 p.m., the fire had been knocked down to the basement level, which continued to push significant dark smoke from the building. Some fire companies had started rotating out of the scene to undergo rehabilitation following hours of work.
Traffic remained impassable in the surrounding area due to the large feeder lines running from hydrants to fire engines.
Five businesses inside the building were affected by the fire. Officials were also concerned that portions of the building could collapse due to the damage sustained during the fire.
The building sits across from the Roxbury branch of the Boston Public Library and near Roxbury Municipal Court. Fire officials expected crews to remain at the scene throughout Monday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
