BOSTON, MA — Commuting to Boston in up to 18 inches of snow is quite a challenge, especially when it means potential changes and delays on public transportation. The MBTA announced their service schedules for Thursday in anticipation of the storm. Depending on the means of transportation, commuters can expect anything from regular service to no service at all.
Here are the levels of service from the MBTA transit options.
- Red, Green, Blue, and Orange lines - Regular weekday service
- Mattapan Trolley - Shuttle bus service replaces trolley service
- Bus and Silver Line - Regular weekday service
- Commuter Rail - Reduced schedule. Trains shaded yellow on paper/PDF schedules will not run. Some express trains will run local. Online schedules and schedules available within the commuter rail app will be updated to only show trains that operate during a Reduced Schedule.
- Ferry - No service
Gov. Charlie Baker said during his storm press conference that MBTA personnel will be working around the clock throughout this storm to prevent service disruptions. Anti-icing equipment and track heaters have been activated to keep a connection between trains and the third rail.

Now just because the MBTA says there's going to be regular service on the rails, doesn't necessarily mean that there will be on-time regular service. Commuters should be prepared for delays and are advised to keep track of how everything is running by visiting the MBTA website, signing up for and checking T-Alerts, downloading the Transit app, and following the T on Twitter @MBTA as well as the commuter rail at @MBTA_CR.
Below are the commuter rail schedules. Note that the trains shaded yellow will not run Thursday.
