BOSTON, MA — The ex-husband of the big Powerball jackpot winner was killed last year in a hit and run in Amherst, MassLive reported Friday.

William Wanczyk, a former firefighter from Northampton, was struck last November by a pickup truck that crashed into the bus shelter he was at. A Belchertown man was arraigned this June on several charges, including vehicular homicide while under the influence. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, MassLive reported.

Mavis Wanczyk came forward Thursday as the owner of the Powerball's $758.7 million winning ticket. It's the largest prize ever won by one person in the lottery in North American history. A hospital worker for 32 years, she quit her job just three months from retirement when she found out she had won.

"I just want to sit back and relax," Wanczyk said. "I had a pipe dream, and my pipe dream has finally come true. I wanted to retire and it came early."
