Red Line Train Derails; Service Finally Restored

A scary scene Wednesday morning as windows shattered and the train car bounced several times, witnesses said.

Service has been restored on a section of the Red Line following a derailment Wednesday morning. Officials said the back car of a six-car northbound train derailed on its way to Andrew Station at about 9:30 a.m. MBTA officials said they were phasing out shuttles around 5:30 p.m.

The train then "re-railed" itself as it entered Andrew Station, allowing passengers to get off safely but sending smoke through the station. Witnesses told news outlets the car bounced several times and at least three windows shattered.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement to reporters, MBTA officials said about 300 feet of railway was damaged. The train involved was immediately taken out of service.

As of 3 p.m., service was still suspended between JFK/UMass and Broadway. Shuttle buses are ferrying passengers in both directions, and the Commuter Rail Kingston/Plymouth, Middleboro and Greenbush lines will make additional stops at Red Line stations, according to Keolis.
