Stepmother of Dead Toddler Turns Self In

Maria Buie, 23, of Roxbury, surrendered Tuesday. Her stepson, Kenai Whyte, was found unresponsive in his father's home in February.

BOSTON, MA - Boston Police arrested the stepmother of a 3-year-old child who died after being found unresponsive in his father's home.

Maria Buie, 23, of Roxbury, turned herself in Tuesday morning, accompanied by an attorney. She pleaded not guilty to in Roxbury Municipal Court to assault charges relating to the death of Kenai Whyte.

Whyte was found unconscious Jan. 31 in his father's Alpine St. home and transported to Boston Medical Center, where he died Feb. 2.

The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

Buie will return to court April 28. Her bail is set at $100,000.
