Sumiao Hunan Kitchen Makes Donation to Animal Rescue Nonprofits

Kendall Square restaurant donated 10% of February sales from select dishes to the BARC organization in celebration of Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year celebration of the “Year of the Dog” kicked off on February 16 and Kendall Square’s Sumiao Hunan Kitchen used it as a kind opportunity to support man’s best friend, the most loyal companion in the Chinese zodiac. Sumiao Chen – the restaurateur, animal lover and Novartis pharmaceutical researcher behind Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, the City’s first Huanese dining establishment – pledged to donate 10% of the February sales from their seven signature La Rou dishes to BARC (Boston Animal Rescue Collaborative) which aims to develop Boston's new generation of dedicated animal rights advocates. The donation – totaling more than $700 – will benefit animal rescue nonprofits across the city, including the ARL (Animal Rescue League) and organizations in Cambridge, Boston and Somerville.

“The Chinese New Year is about creating good fortune and there’s no one that deserves to find loving ‘forever homes’ and care more than these precious pups,” said Sumiao Chen. “We are a team of dog lovers and owners and we’re so happy to be giving this gift to BARC to help their noble efforts.”

During February, guests dined-for-a-cause on SHK’s La Rou dishes. La Rou – a form of bacon that is widely popular in the Hunan region of China and known for its savory and rich smokey zest flavor – is pork belly marinated and smoked with several Chinese spices such as ginger and scallion. The technique and preparation behind La Rou can take up to 5 days to reach its worthwhile tenderized and favorable end result.
