Keep Away From Coyote Compound, Braintree Police Say

BRAINTREE, MA — Officials say a family of coyotes has settled into a Braintree home with a picturesque view, but aren’t welcoming visitors.

A coyote den has been found at the Patty Whitehouse Scenic Overlook, in parkland off Glenrose Avenue and above the Fore River, according to a social media post Tuesday by Braintree police.

“This is an active den, and the mother is currently caring for and protecting her pups,” the post said.

While coyotes generally avoid people, they can react defensively during their denning season, according to officials. In this case, the mother animal might behave with aggression if she feels her babies are threatened.

Coyote attacks are extremely rare, but they do happen. In 2009, a pack killed a hiker in California.

Braintree police urged people not to approach the den and to avoid even lingering nearby – especially at dawn and dusk. Any dogs walked in the area should be closely leashed.

“Let’s help keep both people and wildlife safe by giving them the space they need,” the post said.
