BRAINTREE, MA — A 58-year-old man was killed Saturday afternoon after he drove around railroad crossing gates and into the path of an oncoming commuter train in Braintree.
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. at the Grove Street crossing near the Weymouth town line, according to multiple reports.
MBTA Transit Police told WCVB-TV 5 that the man, driving a black Jeep Cherokee on West Street, intentionally pulled around the safety gates as warning lights signaled the train's approach.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials had not yet released his identity by mid-Sunday.
The crash shut down Grove Street in Braintree and West Street in Weymouth for about four hours while crews investigated the crash.
No one aboard the train was injured, and all of the 74 passengers soon boarded buses to continue their trips.
Transit Police and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.
