After Downsizing Plan, Braintree Nonprofit Adds More Job Cuts

South Shore Elder Services is laying off many more workers than it anticipated in April.

BRAINTREE, MA — A home-care provider, South Shore Elder Services, is laying off many more employees than it planned a month ago.

After notifying the state in April that 52 employees would lose their jobs, the nonprofit said Friday it will cut 131 jobs in June.

The number suggests that nearly the entire workforce of South Shore Elder Services will be without employment. The organization didn’t respond to questions from Patch late Friday.

Sandra Lindsey, South Shore CEO, told Patch in April that the earlier cuts were unrelated to a potential partnership with Old Colony Elder Services.

Founded 48 years ago and headquartered at 350 Granite St., South Shore Elder Services typically employs around 160 people. It reported revenue of $37 million in 2023, the most recent year for which tax information was available – but ended up in the red by over $1 million.

On March 18, SSES said it had signed a letter of intent “to explore a strategic partnership” with Old Colony, based 10 miles away at 144 Main St., Brockton.
