City Council Delay Action on Immigration Ordinance

The council voted to delay action on the Trust Act.

BROCKTON, MA — With immigrants and advocates calling opponents racists on one side and upset city residents and hecklers telling immigrants to come to the country through legal measures on the other, the City Council decided to delay action on an ordinance that would have prevented the Brockton Police Department from detaining undocumented immigrants for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement unless they have a criminal warrant.

Monday night, the council voted to delay action on the Trust Act immigration ordinance, according to the Enterprise. Some officials said they were uneasy about being seen as a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants.

The ordinance will be revisited next month and in November after more review.
