📰 News we're reading

1. Brockton fire official orders end to unsafe 'closet' time-out rooms (enterprisenews.com) — A Brockton deputy fire chief has ordered the school district to stop using converted storage closets as student time-out rooms, calling them unsafe and demanding a list of all such spaces. The superintendent agreed to halt the practice, as families and state regulators scrutinize how long and how often Brockton students are secluded, with new Massachusetts rules on time-out and seclusion taking effect in August 2026.

2. MassHousing Provides $50M in Financing for Affordable Housing Redevelopment in Brockton, Massachusetts (rebusinessonline.com) — A major overhaul of Brockton’s aging Campello Apartments is moving forward with $50 million in MassHousing financing, backing a multi-phase redevelopment led by the Brockton and Cambridge housing authorities. The first phase will replace demolished high-rises with a seven-story, 144-unit building reserved for lower-income households, adding modern amenities like fitness, laundry, and social spaces for residents.

3. Pastor Norales Garners All-New England Honors at DIII New Englands (bsubears.com) — Brockton sprinters Javon Epps and Joshua Cardichon helped represent the city at the Division III New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, competing in the 100 and 400 meters for Bridgewater State. Freshman standout Clayton Pastor Norales of New Bedford led the Bears by earning All-New England honors in the long jump with a career-best leap, while several other BSU athletes advanced in sprint, hurdle, and field events.

4. Mass. couple accused of taking $17K+ from GoFundMe for unhoused man (wpri.com) — Brockton readers should know that prosecutors say a Bridgewater couple faces charges after allegedly raising more than $17,000 on GoFundMe for an unhoused man and then using most of the money for their own expenses. The investigation, announced from Brockton, found the man, Greg, died after reportedly receiving very little of the donations, and the couple later had to borrow money to repay GoFundMe.

5. Police Blotter: Massachusetts alleged child rapist sheriff's deputy faces more charges (bostonherald.com) — A Bridgewater couple accused of misusing GoFundMe donations for a homeless man is set to be arraigned at Plymouth Superior Court in Brockton, tying the high-profile fraud case directly to the city’s courthouse. The broader police blotter also details several serious criminal cases and investigations across Massachusetts, from alleged child exploitation to suspected arson and a rape conviction.
