AVON, MA — A black bear was sighted in the area of DW Field Park and DeMarco Park on Friday, according to the City of Brockton.

The gates at DW Field Park were closed at South Street, and the public was asked to avoid the area, NBC 10 Boston reported. The park has since reopened.

"Animal Control is asking residents in the area to use caution. If seen do not try to approach or follow the bear," Holbrook/Avon Animal Control wrote on Facebook. "Also keep a close watch on pets, secure trash barrels, chicken coops, and remove bird feeders until the bear moves through the area."

Several residents had seen and photographed the black bear Thursday night in the area of Route 28 and North Main Street in the area of the Avon/Randolph town line.

The bear was then sighted twice more in the area of DeMarco Park and DW Field Park, according to animal control. It was spotted "making its way south towards the Brockton line," according to the city.

The state government has advice on how to prevent conflict with black bears. This includes never intentionally feeding bears, removing bird feeders, and securing garbage.
