Locals describe cutting back on essentials, skipping medications, and closing off rooms to afford power, while outreach workers urge people to enroll in aid programs now, warning that winter heating costs will likely be even tougher.
2. Brockton water main flushing may cause discoloration (enterprisenews.com) — Brockton is flushing its water mains through Oct. 1, which may temporarily discolor tap water in neighborhoods from Court Street to the Abington line. City officials advise running cold water for several minutes, waiting an hour, and repeating if needed, and say evening flushing from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. should minimize disruption while maintaining the system.
3. Taunton shooting hits close to home for Brockton Cape Verde community (enterprisenews.com) — Brockton's Cape Verdean community is grieving after a deadly bus crash on Cape Verde's Fogo island and a Taunton house-party shooting that killed 22-year-old Brockton resident Zirovick De Pina. Local advocate Leny Monteiro, co-founder of Brockton nonprofit SABURA, describes how youth and families are coping, while also noting supportive responses like vigils, fundraisers, and mental health outreach abroad.
4. New England Was Promised 'Up To 20' Mini-Pitches With The World Cup. How's That Going? (binj.news) — Brockton has already gained a new mini-pitch at Mulberry Street Park through a World Cup–linked promise to build small soccer courts across New England. The investigation finds organizers delivered only half of the mini-pitches originally touted, but they now say 17 will be finished by spring 2027, with more local projects possible if funding and partners line up.
