BROCKTON — A 25-year-old man died Friday night after police shot him, following a confrontation.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz office told reporters that Christopher Calabro was waving a knife at police officers on Court Street before the man was shot at about 12 p.m., Friday. Calabro was also threatening to hurt himself.

Calabro was rushed to Good Samaritan Medical Center and transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he died that night.

Steve Littlewood, who was working at a house across the street, said he saw the last moments of the shooting. One of the officers backed up and ordered Calabro to drop the knife, and Calabro was shot when he continued moving towards the police officer, Littlewood said.

“I saw the knife,” Littlewood told the Brockton Enterprise. “He was waving it at (the officer’s) face like he was going to charge him. It looked like he was going for (the officer’s) face or throat.”

Calabro's girlfriend, who would not show her face on camera, told CBS Boston he was shot five times and believed the police used excessive force.

"He didn't want to hurt anybody, he just wanted to hurt himself," she said.

The district attorney's office requested an independent review of the shooting. The Cape and Islands District Attorney's office is conducting the review.

The name of the officer who shot Calabro has not been released.
