Brockton Native Receives $20,000 Scholarship Award

Lucilia Goncalves currently attends UMass-Dartmouth and is double-majoring in Biology and Crime and Justice Studies.

From Mass Mentors: On June 6, Brockton native, Lucila Goncalves was recognized as the 2018 KELLY Scholarship winner at Mass Mentoring Partnership’s Champions of Mentoring event at Fenway Park in Boston. Goncalves was joined by her mentor, Janet Trask of Brockton Christian Mentoring Initiative, who she has been matched with for 6 years.

“Having a caring adult in my life made the difference between success or failure. It meant that I had someone who cared for me and would look out for me,” said Goncalves. “Without my mentor Janet, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.”

As their signature and 14th annual fundraising breakfast, Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) hosts this event in partnership with the Boston Red Sox to recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses in the community who are supporting the needs of young people across the Commonwealth. In its 11th year and founded by the Kelly Family Foundation, the KELLY Award is a $20,000 educational scholarship for a young person who has overcome adversity with the support of a mentor.
