The Brockton Symphony Orchestra (BrSO) opens its Masterworks series with “The Planets,” an awe-inspiring program spanning more than a century of orchestral imagination, on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 3:00 PM at Oliver Ames High School Auditorium in North Easton.

The concert opens with Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Metacosmos, a vast and otherworldly soundscape in which powerful forces seem to pull between chaos and beauty, darkness and light. The program then turns to Gustav Holst’s monumental orchestral suite The Planets, composed amid the upheaval of the First World War. From the relentless force of “Mars, the Bringer of War” to the serenity of “Venus, the Bringer of Peace,” Holst uses the heavens to explore something profoundly human.

In a world still wrestling with war and peace, uncertainty and wonder, these two extraordinary works invite audiences to look beyond themselves—and to hear our own turbulent, beautiful humanity reflected in the cosmos.
