Explosions As Brockton-Easton Line Crash Knocked Out Power

The utility pole split at the bottom and fell on top of a woman's Volvo. Several explosions went off minutes later.

BROCKTON, MA — An SUV crashed into a utility pole on the Brockton-Easton line Friday morning, causing explosions and temporary powers outages

Police said a woman was driving a black Volvo SUV and smashed into a utility pole on West Elm Street Extension around 11:30 a.m.

The utility pole then split at the bottom and fell on top of the woman's car, police said.The rest of the pole was laying across the street and tool out wires for a nearby house on the way down.

Minutes later, police said several explosions set-off, and left a strong smell throughout the neighborhood. There were temporary power outages on the west side of Brockton and in Easton, following the crash.Within minutes of the crash, several loud explosions took place, rocking the neighborhood and giving off an acrid smell that permeated the air.

The driver, who police have not identified, was taken to Good Samiritan Hospital for evaluation. No other injuries have been confirmed.

Power came back faster than anticipated for much of the affected area. David Twombly, Easton’s director of school operations, told the Brockton Enterprise that Center Elementary School had its power restored by noon.
