BROOKLINE, MA — When Clover, the healthy fast food restaurant, closed this spring, it left a prime restaurant spot open on Harvard Street in Brookline Village. It appears that gap is about to be filled with poke bowls and sushi.
A sign above the space boldly pronounces the new restaurant on Harvard Street will serve poke bowls and Sushi. Poke is diced raw fish served as either an appetizer or as a main course with seasoning and is one of the main dishes of Native Hawaiian cuisine. In recent years, Poke and then poke on top of rice (poke bowls) have become popular on the mainland.
Brown paper still covers the windows at Poke Garden, but between the gaps in coverage a passerby can spot a number of small white tables with chairs. That's different.
When Clover occupied the space, it was not zoned for seating unless the owner renovated to make the bathroom handicap accessible, which never quite happened. According to the town, the inside has capacity to seat 12 people.
In September, owner Rong Jin Chen, who has another restaurant in Cambridge, came before the Select Board and got approval to open "Poke Garden" at 6 Harvard Street.
The fast food restaurant plans to be open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday-Saturday until 10 p.m.
More to come.
