Weather forecast:
• BCF Safety Net Grant Program 2026 (Massachusetts) (fundsforngos.org) — Local nonprofits, town departments, and community groups can now seek Brookline Community Foundation Safety Net grants of up to $25,000 to support essential services for people who live, learn, work, or play in Brookline. Funding can back rental and cash assistance, food access, childcare, health care access, and other crisis-response services, with priority for equity-focused efforts and BIPOC or otherwise marginalized residents. Eligible applicants must be nondiscriminatory and in good standing in Massachusetts.
• Seed of a good idea: 13-year-old Brookline student earns national recognition tackling reforestation, climate solutions (bostonherald.com) — A 13-year-old Park School student in Brookline, Kaia Minn, has earned state and national recognition for developing biodegradable lemon-peel seed pods that dramatically boost germination while avoiding plastic waste. Inspired by wildfire devastation and conservation work, she’s already presented her research in Los Angeles, filed a provisional patent, and hopes to test the pods with real-world reforestation projects.
• Tobacco Policy Shifts Force Operators to Rethink the Backbar (cstoredecisions.com) — Brookline, Mass., pioneered a “tobacco-free generation” law that permanently bans nicotine sales to anyone born in 2000 or later, a policy since copied by 21 other towns. Convenience store advocates argue the rule unfairly blocks adults from legal products, shifts sales to nearby states and illicit markets, and complicates compliance as Massachusetts and other states tighten tobacco regulations.
