Veteran Brookline Police Officer Retires After 30-Year Career

BROOKLINE, MA — A longtime police officer who spent more than 30 years serving the town has retired after a career largely spent in the department's patrol division.

Officer Steve Weinstein retired from the Brookline Police Department after more than three decades of service. Weinstein was appointed as a police officer in September 1996 and went on to spend much of his career working in patrol.

Weinstein also became a familiar face at the Brookline Police station, where he regularly worked the front desk during the department's evening hours. Department officials described Weinstein as a knowledgeable officer and dedicated friend whose positive attitude made him a pleasure to work with.

During his career, Weinstein received a letter of commendation in 2017 for his role in an investigation that began when a resident entered the police station and reported being followed by another driver for approximately four miles. Weinstein, who was working the front desk at the time, went outside to investigate and broadcast a description of the vehicle as it left the area. Another officer subsequently located the vehicle, and police determined the driver was wanted on felony warrants out of California involving kidnapping, threats, assaults, and other violent offenses.

Weinstein also served as treasurer of the Brookline Police Union.

"Steve truly cared about the department, his fellow officers and the community in general," the department said in a statement.
