Brookline Coyote Warning As Sightings Increase Amid Breeding Season
Brookline Animal Control said the increase in sightings has been reported in the South Brookline area.
BROOKLINE, MA —It's breeding season for coyotes and that has helped contribute to an increase in recent sightings of the wild canine in South Brookline, according to Brookline police.
Brookline Animal Control said that while "the presence of a coyote is not cause for concern," residents should be alert to their presence — especially when with domestic dogs and around smaller animals — and should be careful not to do things that invite human interaction such as leaving food outside a home, creating opportunities for dens and other shelters for breeding dogs in the lawn or letting pets run free at night.
"Coyotes are naturally afraid of people," police said. "Coyotes that spend a lot of time around people or regularly feed on human-associated food can become habituated and exhibit bold behavior toward people."

Being aware of surroundings, police said, will prevent a coyote sighting from becoming unnerving for both the person and the animal.
"Don't let a surprise encounter with a coyote rattle you," police said. "Stay calm, stand tall, and make yourself heard."
