Brookline Journalist Joe Bergantino Detained in Russia

He was in the country teaching a class to reporters.

A journalist from Brookline this week was detained in Russia.

Joe Bergantino, director of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, traveled to St. Petersburg with professor Randy Covington to teach a course to local reporters, according to WGBH.

Russian investigators claimed he entered the country with the wrong visa. Bergantino told WCVB the charges are “outrageous.”

Bergantino and Covington were released and planned to come back to the U.S. Saturday, WGBH reported.

Bergantino is an award-winning investigative journalist who worked at WBZ (Boston), ABC News, and Good Morning America. He teaches at Boston University.
