BROOKLINE, MA — Brookline Police were measuring natural gas levels on Washington Street Monday morning after closing a portion of the Brookline Village street due to a "utility hazard." Brookline Police reported the incident at 305 Washington St. at about 9 a.m.

Brookline Police reported later Monday morning that there was no gas leak and that what was first reported as a "smoking man hole" was actually a "smoldering electrical line."

The road was reopened about 9:30 with Eversource crews remaining in Brookline Village to work on the problem. Police advised drivers and walkers to use caution while in the area later Monday morning.
