BROOKLINE, MA — A Brookline resident has been nominated as a candidate for the 2022 Harvard Board of Overseers election, set to take place this spring.

Monica Bharel, a graduate of Boston University, will be considered for six anticipated vacancies on the board. She currently works as Senior Adviser to the Mayor of Boston.

The Harvard Board of Overseers is one of the university’s two governing boards, along with the President and Fellows, also known as the Corporation. Formally established in 1642, the board plays an integral role in the governance of the university, including directing the visitation process and providing counsel to the University’s leadership on priorities, plans, and strategic initiatives.

The candidates for Overseer are chosen by the alumni-led HAA nominating committee during a series of meetings each fall. Candidates are considered based on prior board service and an understanding of complex organizations, experiences and accomplishments in an academic or professional domain, a broad interest in higher education, a commitment to investing the time and energy required for effective service, and the ability to lead and build consensus.

The 2022 election will begin on April 4 and completed ballots must be received by 5 p.m. on May 17. Eligible voters include all holders of Harvard degrees as of Jan. 1, 2022.
