Brookline School Officials Pull Textbook with Controversial Slavery Passage
The 2003 edition of "Harcourt Horizons: United States History" said that some slaves were "treated well."

Brookline school officials have pulled a history book from classrooms after a backlash from parents over a controversial slavery passage.
WHDH reported a section of the book reads: “Slaves were treated well or cruelly depending on their owners. Some planters took pride in being fair and kind to their slaves.”
The book has been used in the school system for the last decade. Parents started complaining about the book about a year ago.

“There’s something wrong when we teach our children that there was something good about owning another person. It’s sick,” said Arthur Conquest, a parent of a child in the school system.
The Boston Globe reported school officials considered using the passages in “critical-thinking sessions” but ultimately decided to pull the book last month when more complaints came in.
