Brookline Select Board Sets 2022 Property Tax Rates

Board members voted to increase both the residential and commercial rates.

BROOKLINE, MA — The Brookline Select Board set the 2022 property tax rates last month, voting to increase both the residential and commercial rates once again.

Select Board members set the 2022 residential tax rate at $10.19 and the commercial tax rate at $16.56 per $1,000 in assessed property value, compared to last year's residential rate of $9.80 and commercial rate of $15.99.

Under the new rates, the average single family homeowner will pay $1,318 more than last year, while the median commercial property owner will pay $1,085 more.

While the residential exemption is the same as last year (21 percent of the average value of all residential property), most property owners will see an increase because of rising property values in the area.

The median single family home for 2021 is valued at $1,906,350, up from $1,824,450in 2020, and the median value of a condo is $756,000, up from $750,100

Tax relief

Brookline has a number of tax relief programs for qualifying people with disabilities, veterans and low-income seniors.

One program is the Town of Brookline Taxation Aid Committee Elderly or Disabled Taxation Aid Fund, which helps low-income seniors and disabled taxpayers with their real estate tax bill and is fueled by donations.
