Brookline Town Salaries: Who Made The Most Money in 2018
Here's who made the most in town last year and how many women made it into the top 10 highest earners.
BROOKLINE, MA — A dozen town employees made more than $200,000 in 2018, but only Town Manager Mel Kleckner's base salary topped the $200,000 mark, the first time an employee base salary has done so.
Otherwise, the town's payroll for 2018 showed that, similarly to the year before, the top paid employees for the town and schools included the town administrator, the superintendent of schools, a couple of deputy superintendents and the head of the Department of Public Works. The police and fire chiefs didn't make the top 10, most likely because they're still the new kids in town, both having been hired partway through the year.
Mark Morgan, who was acting police chief for much of 2018 after Chief Dan O'Leary retired, was the sixth-highest paid employees by base salary.

Mary Ellen Normen, a deputy superintendent of schools, has the highest salary of any woman employed with the town and the third-highest base salary. Town Counsel Joslin Murphy has the highest salary of any woman working for the town who is not a school employee.

When it came to the highest earners after detail work (mostly paid by third-party contractors) and educational bonuses, several police officers were among the highest earners. All 10 were men.
In 2017, some 17 employees broke the $200,000 mark when salary adjustments such as overtime are factored in. Last year, by contrast, only 12 employees earned more than $200,000, according to Town records.
Five women made it into the top 50 percent of earners in 2018, making $161,000 or more. Some 21 percent of women made the top 100 highest earners by gross pay, and 14 of those were from the school department. Of the top 10 highest earners in the school department, only three were men.
