Brookline's Tommy Vitolo Wins Democratic Primary For State Rep

Because no one is running against him in November, Vitolo is all but assured as the next State Rep for Norfolk 15th District.

BROOKLINE, MA — After nearly 10 months of campaigning, shaking hands and kissing babies, Brookline Town Meeting member Tommy Vitolo won the Democratic primary by about 54 percent of the vote, according to the early unofficial Town Hall tally. Because no Republican candidate qualified to run, this means Vitolo also wins the 15th Norfolk District seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

"I've had such a great time meeting neighbors around Brookline and hearing about their concerns and ideas for Massachusetts," Vitolo said in a message to Patch earlier in the day.

Vitolo beat out fellow Town Meeting member Rebecca Stone by about 800 votes for the chance to represent Brookline in the 15th Norfolk District.

"I want to begin by thanking my opponent, Rebecca Stone. She ran a great race, and gave voice to important issues in our community. I share many of the concerns she raised, and will always welcome her ideas and opinions in the years to come," Vitolo said in an email to supporters at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

In December Rep. Frank Smizik announced he would be retiring after two decades in the seat. Some 7,200 people cast votes in the Tuesday primary race.

Members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives serve two-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Vitolo, as with all Massachusetts legislators, will assume office the first Wednesday in January after the election.
