Judaism as a Civilization in Modern Jewish Thought

Join the Boston Workmen's Circle to explore the theme of culture and civilization in 20th century Western Jewish thought.  Our aim will be to create a rich conversation about the meaning and importance of having a civilization to live within.  We will study the different nationalist perspectives of Chaim Zhitlovsky, Martin Buber, and Mordecai Kaplan and will conclude the course with a study of novels by Philip Roth (The Human Stain) and Richard Wright (Native Son).  Throughout the course, we will ask: "What are the merits and dangers of building 'Judaism as a civilization' within America?"

Six Sundays: January 23 and 30; February 6 and 13; March 6 and 27; 10:45am – 12:15pm
