How to prolong the glow effect after a facial
By: Mary Kelley
Don’t you love how you look after a facial? You have a radiant glow, you skin is smoother and softer, and you feel so rejuvenated. A facial treatment shouldn’t be just a relaxing, one-time only experience; I want my clients to see continuous improvement in their overall appearance and skin health. Clients always ask “What can I do? What keeps me looking rejuvenated and like I just had a treatment?” Quality home care products are a must (more on that in a bit) but so is continuing to have regular treatments. Depending on my clients’ skin concerns, I recommend regular treatments every 4-6 weeks.

But, why that timeframe? Why not every week or twice a year? This chart from newbeauty.com explains the lifecycle of a facial:
As you can see, facials have long term benefits. You will see an immediate glow and feel hydrated for 3 days. After that, your body starts to “follow-up” on the work we do together during a treatment. Your cells regenerate—creating new, healthy skin. New skin cells are created approximately every 20 to 50 days. As we age, our cells begin to turn over at a slower rate than when we were younger. Facial treatments help cells turnover at a higher rate when I incorporate antioxidants and exfoliating elements into my clients’ treatments.

The perfect time to come back in for a facial treatment is when your cells lifecycle is coming to an end. For most clients, I recommend every 4 to 6 weeks. However, clients with oily, clogged, or acneic skin may benefit from more frequent treatments. The opposite is true for clients with sensitive skin or skin that has an impaired barrier—for these clients, I recommend treatments that are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart.
Now, what can you do in between treatments to keep your skin healthy and looking fantastic? Use appropriate products for your skin type and follow your aesthetician’s aftercare suggestions. Many clients use the wrong products for their skin types and aestheticians offer the best advice on products to keep your skin glowing between facials.
