Parents Infuriated Over Brookline Schools Textbook That Says 'Slaves Were Treated Well'

School officials this week agreed to pull the book from classrooms.

Brookline school officials this week agreed to pull a controversial history book from classrooms after a backlash from parents.

WHDH reported a section of the book reads: “Slaves were treated well or cruelly depending on their owners. Some planters took pride in being fair and kind to their slaves.”

The book has been used in the school system for the last decade. Parents demanded that school officials pull it.

“There’s something wrong when we teach our children that there was something good about owning another person. It’s sick,” said Arthur Conquest, a parent of a child in the school system.

CBS Boston reported another parent, Brooks Ames, said: “This is what they taught in Reconstruction, after Reconstruction. This is a way of justifying racism.”
