View Finder: Tots Get Artsy

Scenes from a weekly class at Brookline Arts Center.

The holds weekly art classes for toddlers and their parents. Merrill Smith, the instructor, has been teaching these classes for the past 30 years. "She knows every toddler in town," says Gina Conquest, a volunteer at the art class. "People who took her class as children are now coming back to bring their kids to the class."

The idea of the class is not only to provide the children with a creative outlet but also to allow them to interact with other children and provide an opportunity for their parents to get to know other parents as well. Sweta Gupta who brings her son Ved Tallapragada to the class, says it's an important outlet for him, especially in the winter.

"It's such a great mix. Creative play, art, cookies, music," says Rebecca Butler, a caregiver who brings 2-year-old Zachary Delaney to the class.
