Student Success: Brookline Students Named to Dean's Lists – June 10

Hana Laurencot, of Chestnut Hill, MA, has been named to Beloit College's Dean's List for the spring semester.

To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must carry a semester GPA of 3.4 or higher and take a minimum of 3 letter-graded units for the term.

Beloit College is a residential, liberal arts college offering 40 majors to its 1,250 students. Located 90 miles northwest of Chicago, Beloit is one of the nation's most international colleges, drawing students from 41 nations as well as 48 states.

St. Mary's College of Maryland announces that Brendan Larrabee of Brookline, MA graduated with a major in economics. Larrabee also earned a minor in mathematics.

The ceremony, which took place on May 12, 2012, featured addresses from Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and President Joseph Urgo, who told the 442 graduating seniors to "attend to essentials" in life and to remember their roots. An honorary degree was conferred upon Rawlings-Blake. Student speeches were made by the Class of 2012 valedictorian and the St. Mary's "quintessential student."

St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.

Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Conn., has announced the Dean's List for the spring semester 2012. To receive this honor, a student must achieve a 3.6 grade average, based on a 4.0 scale. Amanda Sullivan of Brookline has made the dean's list.

Max Queen, a resident of Chestnut Hill, MA, was named to the Dean's List for the spring 2012 semester at Alfred University. Queen is a senior in the School of Art and Design. Students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average to qualify for Dean's List.

Queen is a Art and Design major at Alfred University, which is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top regional universities in the North. In its "America's Best Colleges" guide, the magazine rates Alfred University as "a great school at a great price," ranking it as the number one best value in the Northeast among institutions that offer bachelor's and master's degrees.

A graduate of Brookline High School, Queen is the son of Michael and Deborah Queen.

Emily Heeren, from Newton and four other juniors from Gettysburg College will kayak across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm, Sweden to Helsinki, Finland. This 250 mile self-supported sea kayaking expedition launched June 6, 2012 and will conclude five weeks later in July.

Gettysburg College's Expedition Institute 2012: Baltic Crossing is a culmination of over a years worth of discussion, hundreds of phone calls and emails, countless hours of meetings, contacting and working with multinational businesses, all while trying to learn how to bring a vision to fruition. Solomon was selected to the Tau Gamma Chapter of the national honor society Pi Sigma Alpha. Founded in 1920 as the national political science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha is open to students of political science and related disciplines who attain high standards of scholarship and academic distinction.

Academic prizes were awarded during Honors Convocation, Skidmore's annual celebration of academic achievement. College President Philip A. Glotzbach, Director of Periclean Honors Forum and Professor of English Catherine Golden, Associate Professor of Classics Michael Arnush, Associate Professor of Spanish Grace Burton, and Vice President for Academic Affairs Susan A. Kress were among those awarding prizes to students at the event, which took place in early May on campus.

Founded in 1903, Skidmore College is a coeducational, liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 2,400 students. The college grants the bachelor's degree in 60 majors, including both traditional liberal arts disciplines and pre-professional programs. Skidmore also awards the master of arts in liberal studies degree.

Leah Cohen of Chestnut Hill, MA was named to the Dean's List at Florida Institute of Technology for the spring semester, which ended in May. Cohen is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Science

To be included on the Dean's List, a student must complete 12 or more graded credits in a semester with a semester grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.4.

Martha Myers of Brookline, MA, graduated from Rice University on May 12.

Myers received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.

Khan Academy founder Salman Khan delivered the commencement address.

Rice University President David Leebron congratulated the graduates with a handshake as they walked across the stage.

This year Rice awarded 1,665 degrees, including 881 undergraduate and undergraduate professional degrees and 784 graduate degrees (master's and Ph.D.s).

The Class of 2012 is the 99th graduating class in Rice's history.

• Callista R. Perry, of Brookline, Mass. graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching .

• Helaine T Alon, of Chestnut Hill, Mass. graduated with a Master of Arts in environmental science and policy.

During the 108th Commencement exercises, Clark awarded 546 baccalaureate, 520 masters, and 26 doctoral degrees. Carol Geary Schneider, the president of theAssociation of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), delivered the Commencement address. AAC&U is the leading national organization devoted to advancing and strengthening undergraduate liberal education.

Schneider acknowledged that some pundits have questioned whether a liberal arts education is still a smart choice in this economy. She told the graduating class that, through surveys and focus groups, she has learned that "employers place very high value on the big-picture thinking and the strong intellectual skills that a Clark University education provides."

"Employers are looking for people...who have strong communication skills, who can write well, who can speak well, who have excellent critical thinking skills, who have research skills, problem solving skills. They care a lot about diversity and they want to know they are hiring people that not only can work with, but are positioned to learn from, those whose experiences and world views are different from their own," she said. "All of these have been fundamental to your undergraduate and graduate education at Clark."
