West Nile Virus Alert in Brookline

The potentially fatal virus has been detected in 12 local communities.

State health officials this week issued an alert that West Nile Virus has been detected in Brookline and 11 more surrounding communities.

Last month, a pool of mosquitoes in South Brookline tested positive for West Nile, which can be fatal to humans.

No human cases have been detected so far in Massachusetts. Last year, there were six cases.

“Protection includes using a mosquito repellent with an EPA-approved ingredient according to the directions on the label, using clothing to reduce exposed skin when weather permits, draining standing water to prevent mosquito breeding and repairing window screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home,” officials said in a statement.
