Why You Should Lock Your Car Doors And Not Leave Valuables In Them: Brookline Police Logs

This week, the rash of car break ins continued in Brookline, a couple people reported attempted break ins, and a bat was killed.

They are excerpts taken from the public police log and represent a portion of what kinds of calls the police respond to. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Attempted break in: A Winchester Street resident called police at 8:44 a.m. to report someone attempted to break into their home. The subject could not be located due to the lack of a description from the reporting party.

Bikes gone: A St. Paul Street resident called to report two bikes that had been locked to a railing on the front steps of the home were missing and the lock had been cut.

Break in: Someone on Franklin Street reported someone broke into their home through a window with an air conditioning unit and then left the home through the front door with various items.

Scam alert: A Brookline woman called to report she received phone calls and emails from a company claiming to have a civil suit against her for failing to pay back a loan. But she said she never took out such a loan nor does she have an account with one of the banks involved. She completed a fraud report and was advised to contact the Federal Trade Commission and major credit bureaus regarding the incident.

Tuesday, Aug. 8

They will pull you over: Around 12:30 a.m. an officer looked up the plate of a car headed down Beacon Street and it came back that the car's driver had a suspended driver’s license. The officer pulled the car over near Beacon and James street. And then gave the driver a citation for driving on a suspended licence. It's unclear if that person was also arrested.

Car break: A High Street resident called to report that the previous evening he had parked outside a restaurant and when he returned to the vehicle, he discovered a purse was missing from the center console. There was no damage to the vehicle. Surveillance footage from the area has been placed into evidence.

Jackpot: A Jamaica Road resident called to report a purse with its contents, including passports, spilled over the porch. One of the passports belonged to an individual who had reported a breaking and entering of a motor vehicle earlier in the day. The purse and its contents were photographed and submitted into evidence.

Stealing, and tampering with mail: A Gardner Road resident called to report she had two packages stolen from her front steps recently. One was delivered on Aug. 3, another on Aug. 4, and even though she had a neighbor go look for them on Aug. 5 they were no where to be found.

Left in the Lyft: Someone called to report he left his phone in a Lyft vehicle. He has used the Find My iPhone application to send alerts to his phone, but received no response. Lyft Customer Service advised him to contact the local police.

Wednesday, Aug. 9

Straight from a horror movie: A Longwood Avenue resident called police to report for that around around 5 p.m. the previous evening, he noticed damage to his front door and lock, including pry marks. The man said he was home during the time, but did not hear anyone trying to break in. It does not appear that the suspect made entry. Detectives arrived and processed the scene.

The animal control officer has a stuffed, plush bat by his desk: A Waverly Avenue resident called around 7 a.m. to report a bat in house, but when animal control came to check it out they couldn't find the bat. He noted he was planning to have the health department follow up, but the resident called back three hours later and Animal Control was able to capture the bat and transport it to the State Lab where it will be tested for rabies (after it's killed).

The rash of car break ins continue for those who don't lock their car: An Alberta Road resident called to report her car was broken into over night. She told police she parked her car in her driveway at around 10:15 p.m. the previous evening and left the vehicle unlocked with her wallet in the center console. When she returned to the vehicle the next morning, the wallet was gone. And then she found her wallet on the street with its contents scattered on the road. All contents were accounted for excluding cash.

A South Street resident called to report her car was also broken into over night. She told police she parked her car in her driveway the previous evening at approximately 9 p.m. and when she returned to it at approximately 8:30 a.m. it had been rummaged through. Only change was missing. The car had also been left unlocked.

Drug deal busted by a resident's tip: Someone called police to report she'd seen two people come up to two men sitting on a park bench at Amory Park. Based on the interaction she believed it to be a drug transaction. Officers located the individuals on the bench. One of them was found to have marijuana and a large sum of cash in his possession. These along with plastic baggies and a digital scale were placed into evidence. This subject will be summonsed to court for Possession with intent to Distribute Class D drug.

Thursday, Aug. 10

Wait a minute: A Ivy Street resident called to report some time last Friday, he noticed some items missing from his home and thinks they might have been stolen.

Dude, where's my car?: Someone called to report he parked and locked his Prius near the corner of Newton Street and St. Paul Avenue and when he came back it wasn't there. He called to see if it was towed, and it didn't come up in any records.

You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here: Someone on the Pleasant Street Library staff called to report an older man sleeping in the library. They said they just wanted help moving him along.

Bike be gone: Someone reported a bike stolen near the corner of Dummer and Essex. One person was arrested.

Pedestrian hit: A pedestrian was hit by a car at the garage at 1244 Boylston around 2:20 p.m. Police noted someone was transported to the hospital around.

If a tree falls on a car in Brookline... The Tree called to report a tree fell on a car near the corner of Harvard and Vernon street around 10:47 a.m. The car was empty and forestry team was on the scene.
