BURLINGTON, MA — Animal Control found a monitor lizard hiding in a car's wheel well recently.
Burlington Police Animal Control posted the following on Facebook along with a video of the lizard:
"What started as a report of a lizard in a Burlington parking lot turned into the safe capture of a mangrove monitor. Certainly not your everyday call in Massachusetts.
"A heartfelt thank you to Cambridge Animal Control for their support during this rescue and to Rainforest Reptile Shows for their expertise.
"Exotic reptile ownership is regulated in Massachusetts and some species require permits. Please do your research before purchasing a pet."
Animal Control said that mangrove monitors are illegal to possess in Massachusetts without a permit.
"If not captured, this creature would not survive the New England cold weather," they wrote.
The species of lizards can grow up to five feet long.
