BURLINGTON, MA — Lahey Clinic has received state approval for a major expansion that will add hospital beds, expand cardiac services and potentially reduce emergency department wait times.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health approved the project, which will add a new inpatient unit with 36 medical-surgical beds and eight observation beds at Lahey's main campus in Burlington.
The expansion will also include a new cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab, providing additional capacity for diagnosing and treating heart conditions.
The project is intended to address growing demand for inpatient care and reduce the time patients spend waiting in the emergency department.
"This approval by the Department of Public Health is an important recognition of the evolving healthcare needs of our patients and communities," Susan Moffatt-Bruce, president of Lahey Clinic, said in a statement.
The project also includes a second CT scanner at Lahey Clinic's Peabody location, expanding access to diagnostic imaging for North Shore patients.
As part of the expansion, Lahey will invest nearly $4 million in community health programs and partnerships.
The project is a major component of Lahey's ongoing $150 million fundraising campaign, which supports improvements to facilities and specialized medical services.
No construction timeline or anticipated completion date has been released.
