CAMBRIDGE, MA — A South Carolina man was arrested after Cambridge police say he displayed a handgun and threatened another person during an altercation, the Cambridge Police Department announced.

Josh Bruce, 27, was arrested on Tuesday, July 21, after officers responded to Franklin Street and located him nearby. He is resident of the city of Florence in South Carolina.

Police said Bruce allegedly attempted to flee during the investigation and discarded a bag containing a loaded 9mm handgun with a defaced serial number. Officers recovered the firearm and determined Bruce does not have a Massachusetts license to carry, making his alleged possession of the firearm and ammunition illegal.

Bruce was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number during the commission of a felony.

Bruce has since been arraigned in Cambridge District Court. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case. The department gave credit to the person who first reported the incident, saying the prompt communication helped lead to the apprehension.
