2nd Man Charged In Connection With Fatal Shooting Of Cambridge DPW Employee

The Fourth of July crime left the community in sadness and shock.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — A second man has been arrested in connection with the fatal July 4 shooting of a Cambridge Department of Public Works employee.

Giovani Arroyo, 22, of Boston, has been charged with murder, carrying a firearm without a license, and conspiracy to commit a crime in the killing of Xavier Bautista, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Pauline Wells. Arroyo is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Cambridge District Court.

The arrest comes more than two months after Rayquon Brown, 29, of Canton, was charged with murder, carrying a firearm without a license, being an armed career criminal, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the shooting. Brown was arraigned in Cambridge District Court and ordered held without bail.

Bautista, 32, was fatally shot during the early morning hours of Saturday, July 4, near the intersection of Norfolk Street and Broadway. Cambridge Police received a 911 call at approximately 5:24 a.m. after pedestrians discovered Bautista lying in a pool of blood. Cambridge Police, Cambridge Fire and ProEMS responded to the scene, where Bautista was pronounced dead. An autopsy later determined he died from two gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, Bautista had left his home around 4 a.m. wearing his Cambridge Department of Public Works uniform when he was confronted by multiple masked men who shot and killed him. Authorities allege the group fled the area in a white Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The subsequent investigation included witness interviews and a review of surveillance video. Investigators previously identified Brown and his vehicle as being at the scene during the shooting. Prosecutors said Brown acted as a lookout and potential backup while holding what appeared to be a firearm, at one point extending the object as though aiming it.

Authorities previously said there was no known connection between Brown and Bautista and that the motive for the shooting remained under investigation. Officials have not yet released additional information regarding Arroyo's alleged role in the killing.

The homicide has been investigated by the Cambridge Police Department, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney's office.
