CAMBRIDGE, MA — A local towing company has fired an employee after a video circulating on social media captured the driver using racist language, according to a statement from the business.
Bostonian Towing said it reviewed dashcam footage of the encounter and terminated the employee effective immediately. The company, located at 162 Alewife Brook Parkway, said the remarks directly targeted the Asian community.
The incident happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Bishop Allen Drive and Norfolk Street in Cambridge.
"After reviewing the dashcam footage, we are absolutely appalled and disgusted by the racist, hateful, and unacceptable language used by this individual," Bostonian Towing said in a statement.
The company apologized to the person subjected to the remarks, the Asian community, and others affected by the incident. It said the former employee is no longer affiliated with Bostonian Towing.
"We recognize that an apology alone does not undo the harm caused," the company said. "We take this matter seriously and remain committed to maintaining an environment built on respect, dignity, accountability, and professionalism."
Bostonian also operates under the name Bostonian Transport and offers local and long-distance towing, private-property towing, and roadside assistance. The company advertises 24-hour service and lists partnerships with Tesla, AAA Northeast, and automotive dealerships on its website.
Ralph Loftus owns the company, which began operating and incorporated on June 18, 1999. Bostonian currently has an F rating, citing six complaints and a failure to respond to five, according to the Better Business Bureau. The rating does not establish the validity of individual customer allegations or a connection between those complaints and the encounter.
The company's statement did not identify the fired employee.
"This behavior does not represent who we are, what we believe in, or the standards we expect from anyone wearing our company name," Bostonian said.
