1 Dead In Chelmsford Crash

The driver of a car that went off Rt. 3 and into the water died Sunday evening.

CHELMSFORD, MA – One person was killed in a crash on Rt. 3 in Chelmsford Sunday evening, state police said. Shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to the southbound side of the highway near Exit 30, where a 2011 BMW X3 had driven off the road and into the water.

An off-duty state police trooper who found the crash called it in and jumped into the water to save the driver, according to police. Police pulled the driver, a 63-year-old Bristol, NH man, from the car and took him to Lowell General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe the man may have had a medical incident prior to the crash. He was the only person in the car when it went off the road, police said.
