It's All Chicken Math

Chicken Math - How Could I Resist?

I'm down to the countdown again! I had an attack of 'Chicken Math' this month. I learned from the website backyardchickens.com that everyone that gets chickens ends up at some point having a case of chicken math.

To explain it in non-chicken person terms, once you get chickens, even if you end up getting rid of some, you will always end up with more than you intended.

This is my second attack of chicken math.  The first time it happened I was totally unaware that there is no cure for this and it is an inevitable part of being a chicken owner.  It's easier to just 'let it take you'.

Last July was the beginning of my first 'episode' when I discovered that my cute little chick Hooter was actually a rooster - much to the dismay of my neighbors.  I brought Hooter to the Aviculture Exchange in Westford and bid a sad farewell.

In August I had planned on getting one chicken to take Hooter's spot in the coop, but when I went with my son to pick out a chicken from a friend's flock, I ended up coming home with three chickens!

So, here I go again.  I was very strong when I placed the first chick order for Agway in March. I did not even add one chick to the order for myself.  However, when it came time to place the second order during the first week of April, the fever came back!

Somehow after I had placed the order, and I was seeing (and thinking) clearly again, I realized that I had slipped in an order of three chicks for myself! So, next week when the order comes in, I will be getting three Silkie chicks.  Stay tuned for pictures!
