Chelmsford Marijuana Shop Ban Up For Vote

CHELMSFORD, MA — Chelmsford voters this month will decide on a proposal to ban recreational marijuana shops. The vote will happen during the annual fall Town Meeting Monday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Chelmsford Senior Center on Groton Road. Voters during Town Meeting will also decide on a host of other proposals, including allowing town officials to buy the Chelmsford Forum for $1.2 million and create a new economic development position.

In November, Massachusetts voters approved legalizing recreational marijuana by a margin of 53 percent to 46 percent. In Chelmsford, voters rejected the proposal by a slim margin of 51 percent to 49 percent. The statewide legalization measures allows individual municipalities to ban recreational pot shops if they so choose. Multiple communities, including Falmouth, Burlington and Milford, recently instituted bans. (Sign up for free daily newsletters and breaking news alerts from Chelmsford Patch.)

State officials are currently working on regulations for recreational marijuana shops, which could open by the summer.
