Chelmsford Police Officer Spots Fire, Alerts Residents

A passing police officer on patrol raised the alarm about a fire early Monday morning.

CHELMSFORD, MA – A quick-thinking Chelmsford police officer alerted residents to a fire in their home Monday morning. At approximately 3:20 a.m., Officer Aidan Gillis saw smoke and smelled a burning odor while on patrol.

He traced it back to a smoldering window planter at a home on a dead end street, police said. Gillis called it in to the Chelmsford Fire Department and alerted the sleeping residents.

The fire was quickly knocked down, and there was very minor damage to the home. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was improper disposal of smoking materials, according to a Chelmsford police statement.
