CHS Speech and Debate Team Member Erin Phillips Wins 1st Place National Tournament

CHS Speech and Debate Team member Erin Phillips won 1st Place in Prose Reading at the 2014 National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC) at Gustavus Adolphus College in, St. Peter Minnesota. After competing in 6 rounds, Erin won first place in Prose Reading besting a number of outstanding student from all over the United States. CHS Assistant Coach, Melinda Phillips, was also presented with an award as the coach of the Prose champion. 

A round of prose reading consists of a student presenting material from a published short story, novel, or essay, fiction or non-fiction. The student uses vocal skills, facial expressions, and/or hand gestures to develop a narrator and character/s and present a cohesive story within a time limit.  

NIETOC provides students with exposure to a diverse group of performers and literature from the nation's best and brightest in Oral Interpretation and Oratory. This year’s tournament had top speech competitors from 40 states. Each competitor earned admission to the tournament through their outstanding performances in a number of tournaments held throughout the year throughout the United States.

Memorial Day Weekend, Chicago, Ill. CHS Speech and Debate Team members Lucas Muratore and Manasi Danke attended the Catholic Forensics League National Tournament.  Both students qualified to attend this prestigious national tournament through their hard work and performances at earlier tournaments in the state.   Lucas Muratore is a senior, and Manasi Danke is a sophomore. Lucas will be participating in Oral Interpretation. Manasi will be participating in Oratorical Declamation, with her rendition of Malala Yousafzai’s (the young girl from Pakistan who was shot by the Taliban) speech to the United Nations.
